Minister Konaković is on an official visit to Algeria

On April 27, 2026, Elmedin Konaković, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Bosnia and Herzegovina, met with Ahmed Attaf, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, National Communities Abroad, and African Affairs of the People's Democratic Republic of Algeria, in Algeria.

The interlocutors expressed satisfaction with the friendly relations between their two countries. They emphasized that Bosnia and Herzegovina views Algeria as a key partner in North Africa and an important link for broader engagement with the African market. They highlighted their joint commitment to transforming this traditional friendship into a modern, strategic, and economically focused partnership.

Minister Konaković also recalled the deep historical ties between Bosnia and Herzegovina and Algeria, noting that Algeria was one of the first countries to recognize the independence of Bosnia and Herzegovina in 1993. He welcomed the opening of the Algerian Embassy in Sarajevo in 2022 and expressed optimism that Bosnia and Herzegovina would soon establish its own embassy in Algeria. He informed Minister Attaf about the current political situation in Bosnia and Herzegovina, including the challenges on its European path and ongoing reform processes.

A significant focus of the meeting was on enhancing economic cooperation. Both ministers noted that the volume of trade exchange between their countries remains below its potential and stressed the need to intensify and align it with their traditionally strong political relations. They explored opportunities for cooperation in energy, infrastructure, and construction, agro-industry, food processing, and industrial products.

The importance of strengthening political dialogue through high-level visits was also emphasized. In this context, Minister Konaković invited Minister Attaf to visit Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Following the meeting, Minister Konaković and Minister Attaf signed a Memorandum of Understanding to promote cooperation between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Institute for Diplomacy and International Relations of the Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, National Communities Abroad, and African Affairs.

The signatories reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing bilateral relations by concluding key agreements and strengthening cooperation in areas such as the economy, culture, education, science, and sports, as well as through mutual support in international organizations.
